FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS 鈥 A fundraiser for combat-wounded veterans and families of fallen heroes was cut short Saturday night by fighting juveniles who invaded the event, officials said.
Two people were arrested for fighting at the Midwest Wingfest, which was held at the St. Clair Square shopping mall, Fairview Heights police said in a post on Facebook. Police pepper sprayed several juveniles and gunshots were heard nearby, but no one was apparently injured.
Juveniles had been fighting in the parking lot outside the event and several jumped the fence to get inside, according to the posting. Law enforcement agencies from several neighboring jurisdictions were called in to assist.
The event was supposed to go until 11 p.m., but management ended it early and everyone left safely, according to a Facebook post from Mayor Mark Kupsky.
